The manufacturers state that the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier (also known as BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Active) has been developed especially for parents on the move. I have examined the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier in what I believe are four crucial areas in an attempt to ascertain whether it is indeed a baby carrier for active people. The four areas I have examined are:
Support
The biggest complaint about most versions of baby carriers is that they cause back and shoulder aches. Therefore one of the most important aspects of any baby carrier is the amount of support it gives to both parents. In this respect the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier will not let you down. It has excellent back and shoulder support even if you have back problems or a big baby! The lumbar support and cushioned double position strap system distributes the baby’s weight evenly, away from shoulders. This makes the carrier excellent choice for taller and bigger parents. In order to get the benefit from these features however, I advise that you read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Comfort
While the extra support features on the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier certainly add up to a very comfortable experience for the more active parent, the comfort of the baby has not been forgotten. Newborn babies can be placed in the carrier facing inward using the padded, adjustable head support to keep them stable, while older babies face outward with the head support folded down in front of them. The unique design supposedly permits the breastfeeding of the baby discreetly. However, in practice this is very difficult to do. A nice little feature is the addition of a front piece that can be easily removed so as not to wake a soundly sleeping baby when taking off the carrier. Also, you can alter the height of the seat into multiple positions which is very good for growing babies
Ease of Use
Another complaint often leveled at baby carriers is that they are not easy to manage when there is only one parent about. The Baby Bjorn Active Carrier is straightforward to assemble and has color-coded latches. Some people have found the instructions a little confusing at first, but most people soon figure them out. These features make it much easier for one person to place the baby in the carrier when they are out and about with baby on their own.
Quality
There are cheaper versions of carriers but few compare to the quality of the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier. The material is a breathable, machine-washable cotton and polyester blend that keeps everyone cool and comfortable. The accessories that you purchase, such as the cover, are also wonderful for cooler weather. In fact, such is the durability of the Baby Bjorn Active carrier, that many moms have said that they were able to use the baby carrier again for any new additions to their family.
The Verdict
Overall, in our opinion there is little wonder that the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier has won awards in England and throughout Europe. It has excellent back and shoulder support and is very comfortable to wear and sit in. Plenty of mothers claim that their baby falls asleep almost immediately when placed in it, leaving them hands-free for other activities. The carrier is a bit more expensive than some carriers but the quality and durability of the build makes it a worthwhile investment. So, whether it is hiking in the woods or taking a trip to the city, the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier will definitely serve you well.

Sheryl’s comment:
I had a Baby Bjorn when my daughter was small and we both enjoyed it even though it cut into my shoulders and pulled my body forward more than the sling. I have learned since then that hanging a baby by their crotch is not the best from a chiropractic standpoint and that a sling or wrap is a much better way to carry and cradle your newborn because their weight is distributed across their back and butt while laying down or legs if they are seated when older. Knowing that, if I have it to do over again, I will probably choose to only use slings, but I would not recommend against a Baby Bjorn because as I said, we both really enjoyed using it and I believe it is a much better alternative to not wearing your baby at all through the use of playpens or vibrating chairs or swings or high chairs etc.
