There are plenty of completed studies that link breastfeeding to higher intelligence levels in children. The studies have usually compared women who choose to breastfeed vs. those who choose formula which create additional questions, such as whether it is the breastmilk or other factors that are increasing the child’s IQ. Breastfeeding mothers may be more likely to avoid TV, read and spend quality time with their children for example. A new study adjusts for these factors and studied the IQ of children whose mothers went to clinics that either encouraged breastfeeding or did not. I think society has interfered with the natural process of child birth and development, not allowing the placenta to nourish and protect the newborn, opting for man made formulas instead of breast milk and a host of shots to protect against disease. I think that not only does the “modern” child have a compromised IQ as a result but their immune system have not been allowed to develop naturally and is therefore weakened and, in addition, these unnatural elements injected into the body, have created abnormalities and future health problems.
@Pitter:
You are right. Manmade certainly isn’t better when it comes to nourishing newborns. How many more parents would breastfeed exclusively for six months or a year if they were fully aware of the benefits?
While I firmly believe breastfeeding is the best way to go and most likely has an impact in immunity and IQ, this study could easily be misleading in that the people who chose to breastfeed have a different way of doing things and make different choices than others. They are a different group of people.
I always heard that children should be breastfed for up to 2 years old, but unfortunately it happens less and less! I agree with your article and thought its great! Congratulations
nowadays, more and more parents have to work hard to make living, who really can afford to give extra energy on kids? Especially, in developing countries. They are lucky to have enough time to spend with their kids. And always buy quick food for kids…sad thing. but like your article.
