Latch is everything. If you have experience with breastfeeding you can attest to that fact. An improper latch makes breastfeeding painful and ineffective. This is one of the most fundamental problems with bottles, pacifiers and artificial nipples. They inevitably destroy the baby’s delicate latch. This video shows how to get a newborn to latch on and what it looks like when they are nursing properly. Make sure the baby’s mouth is wide open, they take most of the areola in their mouth (never just the nipple) and that their earlobe is moving which means they are actually sucking and swallowing, not just monkeying around. Pay attention for a suck-suck-suck- swallow rhythm.
