Facebook vs. Breastfeeding Families Everywhere

Breastfeeding mothers everywhere have my vote! Over fifty thousand people have joined the group called Mothers International Lactation Campaign (M.I.L.C) and have agreed to participate in the virtual nurse-in on December 27, 2008 in which people switch their Facebook image to an image of a child breastfeeding. Now it seems that the whole issue is getting some national media exposure and it is not making Facebook look very good.

Breastfeeding advocates have long known that free formula samples undermine exclusive breastfeeding by giving tired, frustrated mothers an easy out in the first few weeks of breastfeeding. Formula manufacturers have long known the same thing and they know that they best way to get mothers and babies hooked on the formula cycle is to offer free samples in the hospital in the form of “gift bags”.

Lactivists and the formula companies may know it all too well, but unsuspecting new mothers believe they are simply getting a “perk” for delivering in the hospital. Forego the goody bag if you are a new mom because every sip of formula will alter your baby’s latch and reduce your own milk supply. Leave it at the hospital or dump it down the drain if feel inclined but whatever you do, don’t bring it home.

Video: G-Diapers - a cloth/disposable hybrid

This is a great video about the new G-Diaper which is the only eco-friendly disposable/cloth hybrid on the market today. While I am a very vocal advocate for elimination communication (aka diaper free baby), I also know that going totally diaperless is fairly difficult if you ever shop or travel or pretty much do anything away from home. It is not impossible to go totally diaperless but many parents practice elimination communication and use diapers as a backup. (I used diaper back ups until my daughter was almost two).

That said, the G-diaper is a superb alternative to disposables and this video shows why. The waste goes down the toilet where it belongs. You can even compost the inserts that only contain urine. How can anyone vaccinate their child after watching this video?

Many childhood diseases are preventable through proper hygiene. Even if your child were to contract one of these diseases in modern times the odds that it would be deadly are minuscule for most diseases and even slimmer in modern day United States where the vast majority of children receive more than adequate nutrition.

Some vaccines are so totally absurd that I think they need to inject the baby on their birthday to avoid giving the parents the opportunity to give the vaccine some thought. Is your newborn really going to catch Hepatitis before their first birthday (I don’t know of any sexually active newborns).

Autism is for life. You are sentencing your child to a lifetime of being trapped by their own neurological disorder caused by the greed of pharmaceutical companies and your pediatrician.

Do not let your pediatrician intimidate you. Do your own research, trust your instincts and protect your child.

Those that practice Elimination Communication to potty train babies from birth can either forgo diapers altogether or simply cut back dramatically on their use. Practitioners of EC are able to avoid cloth and disposable diapers altogether, form a closer bond with their infants by learning to communicate from birth, the babies never have to sit in their own waste or have a diaper rash and they save time potty training an older,defiant child.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I must have read 15 or more books on parenting, baby care, childbirth and other related topics. A German friend laughed when I told him that and replied “If you want to get a woman to read, get her pregnant!”. I learned a lot of facts about birthing and parenting but a few hours after my daughter was born, I stood by myself in the hospital room, helpless and bewildered because I did not have the foggiest idea how to to change that first wet diaper. I had to run to the hall ask the first passing nurse to come help.

Parents in other cultures learn babycare from observing other parents in their village and family. They help take care of their younger siblings and learn by example. In our suburban, independent society, first time parents have to find other ways to learn the basics of newborn care.

If you are about to be a first time parent then try to have a family member or close friend stay with you for a few weeks after your baby is born to show you the ropes. If that is not possible then hire a postpartum doula if you are able. The following video is a quick helpful look at diapering, bathing and burping 101 which may help you get started. You might not believe it now, but before you know it you will be a very capable, confident parent who has a laugh about how little you knew.

If you are a proud supporter of breastfeeding, then these are a couple of great videos to watch. They are, admittedly, a bit more extreme than most breastfeeding families you may know, but they still underscore the important role breastfeeding plays in bonding and child development. It seems that while the videos cover the basics of attachment parenting, breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding, they seem to mock the ideas in a sense. The bit about elimination communication, for example, which is an increasingly common practice in attachment parenting households, was extreme and misleading. I EC‘d my daughter with great success and never once, did I ever have poo on my floor. It is really ridiculous (not to mention disgusting). Needless to say, they are still great attachment parenting videos.
