This is quite peculiar, but I agree with David… if it’s a cultural tradition and isn’t causing any harm…

In what is likely a centuries old custom, it is improbable that they’ve never had ANY accidental deaths or injuries to the babies.
I definitely wouldn’t call it “harmless”.
